Just to add to this,

Thrust movement (back and forth) is slightly more critical than shaft play, when looking at a 2nd hand turbo.

Ball bearing turbos should have very little shaft play, whilst plain bearing turbos will have more, due to the oil clearance around the shaft. A dry bearing will play, but once oil goes to the bearing, it makes up the clearance.

In any case, the blades should not hit the housing.
