I had my 2002 STI worked on at ASG, and they changed the solenoid amongst some other bits and pieces. From what I could tell they aren't gonna make me or anyone else piss money up a wall just for the hell of it.
This is only an assumption but I would suggest that a different MAC solenoid would probably have a larger range of control, whereas the stocker would be fine for factory boost. Again just my thoughts
