So Sleepy i'll need to change the settings to custom to raise exposure? or light getting into the lens as i parked the car and stood where i thought i could get most light.

Leaving your headlights on can sometimes under expose your photos too (if in auto), trick to that is leave someone in your car and just flick them on and off as you take the photo.
If you can adjust the shutter speed on your camera, experiment with it. At night its not uncommon to have the shutter open for 15 to 30 seconds, but obviously you need a tripod.
Always use the lowest ISO.
