That's bullshit, it's a widespread problem and well documented on the net. I'd be gathering a few URL's and references from various ps3 based forums and get in touch with someone via email, pointing out to them that your situation is not a one off, nor is it a coincidental hardware failure.
I would remind their tech support that firmware enables hardware to communicate with eachother and that your hardware was running perfectly before any software changes.
