Curbing comments for the argueable benefit of others is the justification for political correctness. I would argue part of a emerging societal self policing.
It's the reason that mobile speed cameras work so well. It's the individual's constant questioning if "where is one" that leads to an individual self policing their road speed. The same could be said of self censoring your comments after constant questioning.
May it be that the thought police are already here - we just didn't realise it would be us on ourselves.
