Thanks for that mate, I took the van to a guy from AUSubaru who makes instruments etc, het pretty much stripped down the inverter and worked out that during manufacture they had placed one of the body screws in slightly the wrong position which was contacting one of the diode type things, replaced it with a plastic screw and that side of things is now perfect but because the inverter is so big 2000/4000 the controller can't handle it on start up because it draws too much so they suggested hooking it straight to the battery's which is great (another option would have been to put a small battery in line between the controller and inverter but apparently it makes no difference because everything is still controlled by the box so the solar (when I get it working right) can't overcharge, I just have to watch the voltage gauge to make sure I don't overdraw the battery's.
So thanks very much for your time and I think that caravan repair shop is the one I got to fit my Fiama awning.....on the right heading south?
I've got to try to get hold of old Jim who did my wiring conversion 8 yrs ago, apparently he's a bit of a solar wiz amongst many other things.
Tom.
