I gather the drill is grabing and stalling your drill..........
Blunten the cutting edge of the drill bit slightly with a honing stone or some emery tape etc. it wont drill as quickly but it wont grab either shouldnt be too hard to open 6mm out to 8mm that way even through 35mm plate.............. another trick is step your drill sizes up by small amounts to take smaller cuts untill you get out to 8mm........... |

smaller increments over 2mm will increase the grabbing.
Did you use a hand drill or a drill press?

ive used a hand drill...
drill press would be a better option, but ive got 12 holes to drill, so want it done quickly if possible..

steping the drill bits might make it harder to go through straight??

try bluntening your drill bit first...it is a tried and true method of drilling materials which are prone to grabbing like brass etc even in a drill press..... and if you think a blunt drill bit wont drill have a look at a masonry drill... just dont blunten it too much..it only needs the sharp edge removed so that it doesnt feel sharp. be sure to hold the piece being drilled firmly in a vice ....... |

And use a lubricant. I would say treflex but it gets toxic after a certain degree celcius so id avoid that. Like Lyndon said, incriments of .5mm should be good.
