Remove bonnet scoop..
Hey,
Anyone know if the bonnet scoop is easily removed from a 99 bonnet without damaging either? Thinking of removing once FMIC is installed and putting mesh over the hole so it acts like a vent, should improve airflow for the fmic due to creating negative pressure in engine bay right?? Anyone done this? |

Can easily be removed. Options I have seen are to seal in with perspex (no ventilation), cover with mesh or do a reversed wrx scoop.
In theory it should help draw hot air out of the engine bay and encourage air to flow through the radiator. Not sure how roadworthy it is though. Rear facing scoops without anything to prevent engine bay leakage finding its way onto your windscreen are definately out. Prety sure meshed in holes are too. Think if you take the covers off the mesh panels either side of the boonet at the front you are un road worthy. |

Hmm, knew rear facing open scoops were a no no, but I thought a flat meshed hole would be ok, evo's have them from factory right???

Never has before... :P
what if you had a veined cover under the mesh so it wasn't just an open hole, something like the covers under the smaller bonnet vents?? |

All true. Were they always open when they came from the factory or did they come with covers that were easily removed?? I am not sure. Also there is always the argument as to what came standard on a car and what is a mod. WRX scoops never faced backwards.
I thought the rule was that there cant be any holes in the bonnet that would allow fluid (burst hose) to find its way from the engine bay to the windscreen. It needs to be baffled so there isnt a direct path. But you know, I could be talking shite as well. I guess make the call to a licensing centre before you do it if you are concerned about roadworthiness. |

Sure were. In my younger daze, mates of mine had A9Xs and L34s. All had very neatly cut holes in the bonnets ex factory. GTs had their shakers but they had a rubber gasket around the shaker as such. When the bonnet closed, the gasket sealed against the bonnet hole. But with a real lumpy cam on board, you could see the gasket aint doin' the job!!
I myself was into XU1s so no scoops to be had. I sold my '73 XU1 which was ready to be put back together so I could get my WRX. My '71 GTR is still sitting under cover at my folks place!!!! Last edited by joeman; 06-01-2006 at 03:22 PM. |
