yes but in a car the exhaust exits some distance behind you and is driven away from you so while it might be 117db at the exit of the exhaust its more like 90 at your ears.

90 still needs protective equipment in a workplace
i reckon it would be a lot less @ your ears due to the direction the sound is travelling when it exits

Only if exposed for extended periods of time.
85db = 8 hours exposure 88 = 4 91 = 2 94 = 1 Did a course on this last week actually And yeah, I doubt it would be 90 after some more thought.

90bd is significantly less than 117db, the "loudness" drops by half every 3db. What you would hear in the car would depend on a few factors, but the directionality of the exhaust away from the car would help somewhat.
But even still, its an obnoxiously loud sound for other road users to have to bear. Kinda like Harleys with straight pipes. |

I should dig out the spec on it.
From memory it is maximum of 92dB at a 45 degree angle from the exhaust 1m away with the car revving at 1/2 revs for peak power.

I could be wrong, just going off memory from a few years ago.
Check ADR 83/00 for the requirements. Vehicle Standard (Australian Design Rule 83/00 - External Noise) 2005 Edit: This is how they are meant to test it http://www.ntc.gov.au/filemedia/Repo...stSept2006.pdf And to correct my previous comment. It is at 500m at 45 degrees at 4000rpm (for a 4cyl). As for the maximum level, reading the ADR it is only 80dB now? Seems wrong and I should probably read it rather than skim through... Further edit: Seems only the 2.5L WRX/STI's are subject to ADR83/00 (makes sense since the document is 2005) this gives a WRX a maximum of 85 dB and a STI 86 dB from the signature levels.
