engine block coolant flush
Hi guys i wana do a engine block flush not a radiator flush on my 1998 wrx impreza gc8 ej20 turbo engine ....well I will do I radiator flush but I want to focus mainly on a block flush because of my turbo is letting oil residual sludge in my coolant system
Steps I'll do Take cap off reservoir tank Undo bottom right hose, wait for radiator to empty Take coolant line off turbo (not the one coming from the reservoir tank, the other one that is coming from the left side cylinder head ) Remove thermostat Stick a garden hose into this line, and it will flush through the motor etc. Give it a few mins. Stick the garden hose into the reservoir tank, this will flush the radiator Put bottom right hose back on Connect turbo coolant hose going to the left side cylinder head... Now fill up coolant system with 50/50 water/coolant Squeeze the bottom right hose to burp up any air....square the top left hose going into my radiator to burb up any remaining air.....leave it to sit for 1 hole night.... Let all little remaining air make its way up to the reservoir.... And then start the car with reservoir cap off....let the thermofan come on 4 times at least and let the system run a few times to get any more remain air traped inside..... Also forgot to add when connecting bottom right radiator hose to put thermostat back in lol Reason I'm running the garden hose through turbo coolant line hose is to flush engine block.... And reason why I run garden hose into reservoir tank is to do radiator flush.... This way if i do them separately.... The sludge / crap dosnt get clogged up into my radiator |

I need to add I copied this pattern of method of someone off fourm and what he said makes sense.... I'll let u read and understand what he said that gave me the idea to run a water hose through my turbo coolant line from the cylinder head and flush the engine block through there
Take lid off header tank Undo bottom hose, wait for radiator to empty Take coolant line off turbo (not the one coming from the header tank, the other one) Stick a garden hose into this line, and it will flush through the motor etc. Give it a few mins. Stick the garden hose into the header tank, this will flush the radiator Put bottom hose back on Stick a funnel into the turbo line you flushed through Pour coolant into funnel until visible in header tank Take out funnel & put turbo coolant line back on Top up header tank I've found this way works best in getting all air out of the system and doing a proper flush. Reason why I take off the bottom hose and flush the motor and radiator separately, is so there is less chance of crap coming out the engine etc into the radiator. Pretty sure I learnt this method from someone else on the forum |

Turbo's can't leak oil into the cooling system................
Blown head gaskets do......... P.s if there's sludgey oil in the block it'll already be through the radiator. Before you waste your time - take your car to a shop & have it TK tested.

I'm just about to get mine done as I'm up for a new radiator. I was going to do it myself but thought bugger it get it done properly with full flush and test. I've just done new pump and timing so don't want to stuff things up

You cant get oil in coolant with a turbo unless there is a major crack or corrosion in the core . If you had said crack there is a 99.9% chance the turbo will not turn at all . The tolerances on the shaft are that close and balanced that the shaft would lock up. The core is steel not Aluminium. If you had enough corrosion to create a hole your motor would have failed long before the turbo would have enough to actually leak through. In 20 Years of working on Subarus I have never seen either happen. Do not believe everything posted on a forum . Ive many times pulled apart Ej s with 300000 kms on them and yes there is some corrosion around the water galleries especially on mating faces , heads , block deck, water pump But the only time oil sludge gets in the motor is via block failure , head failure ,or gasket /O ring failure. YOU HAVE OTHER ISSUES!!! Instead of buying turbos, mods etc . Start saving for a rebuild , with parts that will more then handle the mods you want to do. Also jump on a National Forum and post up asking what reputable independent Subaru specialists people use in Victoria. We are a Western Australian Forum , The few members that are listed from other states are mostly people that have moved from here over east and like to keep in touch. We can all recommend workshops over here to go to but it isn't going to help you . Adding Mods to a suspect engine is like putting $200 runners on a fat guy , the runners can handle going fast but the big guy is going to blow a pookoo valve trying to go fast. Thanks for all your information it's true my block is most likely on its way.... Reason I'm getting a new turbo is simply because I need one? That understood? Reason why I'm not getting a block now? Well its rooted yes? So why not drive it until it gives out.... Stuff the heads as well when I get a Jap import engine I'll get heads with that engine.....
All I'm asking is can i flush a engine block through the turbo coolant hose coming from the left side cylinder head? That's all....if u know another good place to flush engine block through another hose please let me know.... I will be doing a radiator flush as well but separately by hand I know how to |

You obviously have extremely limited knowledge of cars in general.
Flushing the cooling system - Buy Tectaloy Mukowt - drain green coolant - add Mukowt to header tank and fill with clean water only - drive the car for an hour or two - remove bottom hose/drain coolant - remove thermostat - remove top rad hose - reverse flush the block from the bottom hose until the water runs clear. Leaking head gaskets do not always over-pressurise the cooling system. Just because the heads check out ok doesn't mean the head gaskets aren't compromised....... Go to a workshop (ANY workshop) & ask for a TK test - it should be $15-$20.......... It will tell you if the head gaskets are fucked or not. Why ask questions if you're not gong to heed the advice given? Bolting a whopping great turbo on a motor that has a non-tunable ecu is extremely stupid. Bolting on a whopping great turbo to a stock motor that is already showing signs of being fucked is even more stupid. Buying a jap import motor & expecting to be able to run that big turbo reliably as your back up plan is stupid. Meh............You just can't help some people...............I'm done here.

Hay rossco I just wanted to say thanks for your advice I'll definitely go and buy some Tectaloy Mukowt and chuck it in the coolant system and flush it like the way u said..... Also I will go next week and ask for a TK test.... I'll definitely go and get a smaller turbo then... Maybe some cheap kingwana of eBay... Would like to get another VF Subaru turbo but I just don't have the money for a new 1200 turbo and more.... Second hand I just don't trust them.....
Sorry but what's the proper term for tk test? If a mechanic asks what's a tk test what do I tell him? |
