Sounds like you purchased yourself a decent rexy for a good price. You may need to spend a little more money on maintenance but if its one thing I know a well maintained rexy can get you years of trouble free motoring. Enjoy your new toy!
Clutch shudder just means the flywheel may need skimming. Throw in a new clutch and make sure you have the flywheel skimmed. Problem solvered!

Clutch change/flywheel skim is a standard workshop procedure, any good mechanic can do it. For reference with workshops, you can find a list of them here:
http://www.perth-wrx.com/vb/mechanic...workshops.html The list is a bit outdated (Maximum Motorsport have moved to Kewdale, STechnic are in a new location, some phone numbers may have changed so worth Googling them first) but it's a good reference list at least for workshop names and what they do. As far as Subaru specialists are concerned any of them on there are worth checking out and you can pick depending on your location. |

does it have a pod filter or oiled k&n panel filter, if so ditch it for a stock paper one & replace the air flow meter with a brand new genuine one, these are by far the weakest link on the my98/99 model and cause the problems you are describing, previous owner could have cleaned it & it ran good for a couple of days
the coilpack on this model is a pretty rigid unit & there is only one that does all 4 plugs so i doubt that it would cause a misfire, changing the plugs won't hurt but the damm afm's on the early wrx's are so so shit |

Even with the stock filter in place I would recommend spraying contact cleaner on the AFM every month or so, just as a precaution, literally a 5 min job for peace of mind. Also nailed it with the plug/coil-pack problem, I would start by just changing the plugs. If it is a mis-firing issue I reckon between cleaning the AFM and plugs you will most probably sort it out, all for couple hundred at most (if new AFM is needed). Hope this helps.

Guys thanks for this. Yes it has a bit of modification on it. Including a FMIC and a k&n pod filter. Will get some plugs on the weekend and give it a go.
