The handbrake shoes will take a few dergrees of drum rotaion to fully energize. There are three separate adjustments required. Few people adjust them correctly. Never adjust the cable before first adjusting the shoe to drum clearance. What you describe is fairly normal, shouldn't be anywhere near as much as an army Landrover though as the transmission mounted handbrake includes diff backlash as well.

If you adjust the handbrake up enough at the rotors there shouldn't be wat your describing. As dtrally said you need to adjust the the handbrake from the rectangle hole that is at the back of the rotors (there is a rubber grommet over it). Chances are you won't need to adjust the cable.

Thread bump, I want to adjust my handbrake a we bit - Its not locking up hard as I want it too.
Here is the picture Ive found for the grommet at the back of the drum Jack 1 side of the car up Release the handbrake Remove the grommet and note the direction of the arrow Use fathead to adjust the cog/starwheel? and moving the cog towards the arrow to tighten it Then loosen it by 4-6 clicks or until it you can feel it? repeat other side am I missing anything or is this procedure incorrect? plz halpp meee

The handbrake shoes should never be dragging, not even the slightest, should always be free spinning. Just a little note to remember when doing this kind of job.

Adjust till there is a slight drag, then back it off 4 clicks, turn the wheel so your sure there is no drag. Do the other side, then adjust the cable at the lever till it comes up approx 6 clicks.
really need both wheels off the ground to do it properly.

6 clicks is a lot, try three or four.

actually 7-8 clicks is specified in the workshop manual, but 6 clicks is more realistic as customers like the feel of that better. 4 clicks is way too tight
