Radiator Coolant
Heya fellas
Will be putting in a new radiator tomorrow. I don't have my owners manual on me for my MY99 RX. Would like to know what coolant to put in it. Specs etc. Besides the genuine Subaru stuff, which would cost a lot, What would be worth the money and not requirer too much stuffing around with premixing etc. Is Tectaloy the go? How much do I need? Fred ________ Buy Glass Pipes Last edited by fffffred; 22-08-2011 at 06:00 PM. |

just make sure you flush the cooling system well, take off one of the heater hoses and flush water through until it comes out clear, if need be take out the thermostat and flush through the block aswell.
Mixing coolants, even after draining it out can cause real problems in the future, we see it all the time. Always Flush. Tom |

A new radiator is going in. I'll flush for sure, thermo stat and that are already out. Just want to know what sort of coolant to use. Any recommendations?

Hi ffffred. Glad to see your mod is a new radiator. For a while my fear was you were putting in a front mount intercooler. I supported you on undercar lights but a front mount on a RX would be too much.
Coolant – use redline waterwetter and distilled water. It does help cooling. Most of the others are not real coolants, they are antifreeze and corrosion protectors. |

There was a discussion a while back about using WaterWetter + distilled water only. It was advised that a small percentage of normal coolant be added as well, for its anti-corrosive properties. This is particularly important in a street driven car, which only sees a coolant flush once in a long long time. Race cars use WaterWetter + distilled water only, because they are frequently stripped down and rebuilt, thus no worry of corrosion.
From memory the recommendation was 20% WW, 40% distilled water, 40% coolant. |

id stick to the genuine coolant for the price you cant go wrong and you dont have to worry about mixing it and getting all the old coolant out.
