When I had a crunchy 3rd gear and asked RMS to put redline in it they said " so you are selling the car then ". Ironically they were right, but i guess it shows that it is only a bandaid solution.

heya lebrunt, got a quote from two places to replace the synchro for 4th (hopefully nothing else wrong) and was $800 at one place and $1200-$1300 at another.
Thanks Scooter, I'll give DT RALLY a call and see what they have to say as well. Going to have to bite the bullet and take it in to have a look inside. Hopefully none of the gears are munted ... Last edited by orwellg; 10-03-2009 at 07:20 PM. Reason: update on information |

If the synchro is going, i doubt it will ruin your gearbox unlike breaking gears

Motul is a good oil but it does not mask any faults like Redline can. A slightly crunchy synchro will usually be helped by Redline. I wouldn't spend $800+ getting the synchro changed without trying $200 worth of oil first.
It does not need to be changed every 10,000km, I'm not convinced it causes all the grief it gets blamed for either. Driving with a crunchy synchro will eventually damage the gear as the synchro dogs are part of the gear. Once the points of them are burred over it's fugged. |

Thanks for all the info, I might give the redline oil a go and see what happens. You're right, the $200 of oil is a lot cheaper than pulling the gearbox out. From what others have said though, isn't it just bandaiding the problem which I'll have to sort out later anyway?

Just an update, put the redline lightweight shockproof in there on the 13th, hasn't had any issues since. A bit stiff in the mornings when it is cold, but no more crunches. $200 is a great deal better than the potential $3.5k for 2nd hand gearbox and diffs ...
Thanks guys for the feedback, redline lightweight shockproof for the win! |

Quote:
Synchros, like limited slip diffs have to be able to apply friction to the mating surfaces to work. The slipperier the oil the less effective they are. Imagine your brakes covered in various different grades of oil, same thing happens with the synchros, they are in effect a 'brake'. The trick is finding an oil that has the right balance of friction and lubrication. The oil filled in his 100,000km service may have lubed the gears and bearings mint, but the synchros couldn't slow the rotating mass of the box sufficiently with that particular oil, doesn't necessarily mean they're rooted. |
