Default Gear changing

Hi,
A friend and I are having a friendly debate on how many k on the econo guage we should be changing gears, without thrashing the car in general driving in the city.
Mine is stock (for now) O2 wrx and his 02 sti.
Your thoughts and opinions appreciated.
I'm definately no expert but he isnt either.
:-)

Keep it off boost but don't labour it in the next gear. Light throttle without being stupid about it.

So changing it each gear at 5 - 6k a no no?
Red line being 7k...

And its not me doing that. Thats our debate.

I usually change gears around 2 - 3k taking it steady. Car cruises smoothly at that.

For good economy, as BlackSTi said, you want to keep the revs as low as possible, without making the motor struggle in the next gear due to its lack of torque at such low rpm (EG: don't use 5th at 40km/h). This can be done at 2500rpm without any problems in any WRX that I've driven.

5-6k rpm shifts should definitely not be used if you're after good economy and an easy drive for your car. To save fuel, do not rev the engine. At such high rpm, the engine will be using way more fuel and be under more stress due to boost (more air, more fuel; more power), a greater amount of intertia being carried by the pistons, friction losses etc etc...

Drive it in vacuum at all times for best economy......You do have a boost gauge right?

Will be slow a buggery but best economy.

Economy 101: Leave car off.

Economy 201: Drive at the lowest rpm you can constantly (i.e. 'highway').

Economy 301: Around the city (i.e. changing gears a lot) drive in vacuum and try to stay out of boost.

Economy 401: Fark thats boring for the extra couple of kms per tank you get. Thrash the shit out of your car like you just stole it and have fun. Want fuel efficiency, buy a scooter.

My interpretation is that below zero on your boost gauge is vacuum. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I normally shift in "vacuum" or around 3000rpm.
