Is the engine oil above the full mark on the dip stick?
If so, it can cause the PCV system to breath a little extra oil into the inlet tract, it then pools up and burns off. I'd try a catch can first and see if it clears it up.

any idea of the cost of replacing the valve stem seals?

The parts are cheap.. its the labour thats a killer.
Engine out, heads off, replace parts, then re-assemble with new gaskets (worth doing timing belt and water pump at same time if its near 100k km), re-fit engine. At least $1000 in labour (maybe more), plus parts? Best you ring your workshop. |

An expensive catch can is $325!
You can can get cheaper, just avoid the $100 chinese ones.

Do an oil change and put in something heavier, 10/15w 40/50 or thereabouts. Better to eliminate the cheaper alternatives first. Catchcan is good cheap insurance as well.

as in gearbox, diff and engine? i presume i would need to drain them all first?
