Completely dead battery
I am borrowing a Hyosung 250R at the moment to get confident riding again, then I will be doing my R test in a few weeks.
Anyway, The bike has been sitting for a few months and the battery is totally dead. Not a big drama on a little bike, as a push start is easy as piss. Anyway I have a Projecta charge and maintain, I have had it on all day, nothing. I then have got a proper battery charger and checked the water levels (really low in some of the channels. (hopefully I didn't fuck it when trying to charge it with the charge and maintain) Anyway, topped it up with distilled. Threw the charger on and it goes straight to float. I remember at Mazda this used to happen so we would get the battery cart, connect it up and then throw the charger on, it would set the battery charger to boost, after a few minutes, you could remove the cart and boost would stay on. (This is probably really dodgy, but it worked!) Anyway I have tried this trick on the bike and no joy. Does anybody have any other suggestions before I just go and get another battery? I know they are probably super cheap but trying to get one on a sunday would be difficult as dealerships and battery wholesale is closed and I assume Super Cheap and Auto pro wouldn't stock motorbike batteries. I would suggest that after trying to charge the battery with insufficient levels of water in it you would have killed the nodes. New battery time unless you have some sulphuric acid to put back into the cells.......

Most super cheap stores do carry a limited range of bike batteries.
You might get lucky. They are usually only around the $50 mark. |

anyway when a battery goes straight to float that means usually that the battery is sulphated. you can try to equalise the cells and break through the sulfate by overcharging to say 16v for a hour or so then put it on a normal charge for 24-48 hours. (that is what you do by putting the battery on a engine start charger) then check the cells with a hydrometer so give that a try. cheers tom

You can buy battery conditioning liquids that you put into the battery to help break up the sulphate. it may work or it may be a waste of $10...
i would look at buying a gel cell battery, it doesnt matter if you store these batts on their sides so there is no chance of losing the gel from the cells. If its a mates bike it would be a nice thing to purchase him/her a new battery, and its alot cheaper than hiring a bike Steve.

Holy crap, I charged it last night by keeping the Jumper pack on it, this morning, full charge, working fine!
I guess with the extra boost like WhiteRX said and with the top up of Distilled water, maybe some life has been breathed back into it! Cheers for the info. |
