Hahaha that pic is disgusting. From my knowledge the dog boxes are straight cut gears that HAVE to mesh properly otherwise chronic damage can occur.
I've heard a few wrxs goin round fitted with dig boxes, they sound crazy but can't imagine they would be fun as a daily

If you're getting a dogbox i would recommend you make sure it has billet shift forks and an interlock kit... like Fozzys.
They are a high maintenance box and get quite annoying if your using it as a daily. For drags and track they are gold but for everyday use just get a 6 speed.

It boils down like this. Every gear is constantly meshed with it's partner but one half can slip on the shaft it's running on. Whether it be dog or synchro engagement is just the way you lock that gear to the shaft, thus driving through that gear while the rest just idle away free. Has nothing to do with being straight, helical, spur, herringbone or whatever shaped tooth. Dog boxes are not stronger because they are dog engaged, that just means they shift faster. The downside is the driver has no help in synchronising the process, he must do it himself. I know a few guys that use dog boxes in road cars and they all have one thing in common. They spend more time off the road than on it. |

Also make sure you have your terminology right. 90% of gearbox's that you hear making a whine on the street are not dog boxes, they simply have an aftermarket straight cut gearset.
If you are really keen I can take you for a drive in my car with a dogbox and show you the pros & cons of what it is really like.

Thanks dtrally, that had given me a better insight into the operation of dogboxes as opposed to the average 5 speed manual box as stock.
I find with my g/box being a bit older the synchros seem to be on the way out, as I'd put it anyway, and I find double clutching and matching engine speed to the gear is a lot mote forgiving on the box. U can imagine a dog box would need this regardless on synchro condition or condition of box, as the gears would need to perfectly mesh together. I've never looked into these boxes myself but I've always been interested as to how they work, cheers for the info

The reason dog boxes are "stronger" is because the gears themselves are wider as there are no synchros in the box taking up room.
this is the link chad was refering too http://auto.howstuffworks.com/transmission.htm

Many, many times I've "fixed" slow synchros with a change to decent, correct weight oil. It need not even be expensive oil in a fancy bottle. |
