Twin-scroll turbos
In order to get rid of the lag monster that is Black Budgie it has been suggested to go to a twin-scroll setup. Currently it has a rotated GT3582R which has a T3 flange. I'd like to get a replacement turbo that also has a T3 flange so installation isn't a big drama but was wondering the following things:
Is a twin-scroll T3 the same as a regular T3? If not, do the headers need to be replaced in order to go twin-scroll or is some sort of adaptor plate available that can be welded on? How much better (ie less lag) would a twin scroll GT3582R be over a regular GT3582R? Or am I better off getting a regular GT32R or something? In short, I want the least lag, most power and bolt-on capability with my existing setup!! (don't want much do I??)

No its a completely different thing. IE new headers, uppipe, turbo, dump pipe. Possibly new sump aswell.

Wot russ has said Darren u will need all of the above. If u wanted to stick with a GT35r go HTA twin scroll probalky pick up 2-500 rpm in spool I think, so u will have 2 decide whether it justifies the cost. Or better to get more responsive turbo like Gt30r.

Sump might be fine...if it looks like a half moon one you'll be right.
But yeah, headers & up pipe will because the left & right side pulses are separated, maybe turbo bracket, maybe dump...all depends on what one you go with. |

Screw twin scroll then, it's not the cost just the fact that there are no workshops in Perth able to just work on one car at a time and therefore take a ridiculous amount of time to get work done, and I can't really be bothered doing that sort of work without a hoist.
So that being the case, it's a new GT30xx. Am I better off going for a GT3076R or a GT3071R? And what size housing should I get keeping in mind I'm trying to keep lag down to a minimum?

I managed to do the conversion with the car on stands & a big piece of cardboard to slid under the car on. It's not that hard.

for a 2.5L engine i would definitely recommend the 3076R. The 3071R will spool barely earlier, and would only make sense if it was a competitive autocross application. For a street setup where you want to beat an equal power level evo, 3076R or 3582R is the way to go. Twinscroll just makes the 30R stronger. It spools earlier, makes boost sooner, and has quicker throttle/boost response, particularly in the lower rpm. There is just more energy available for the turbine. |
