You're not alone Mark. Damo's ej205 - PFC combo is up around there too, and performing well might I add.

The "ej205's can only handle 16psi" comment from what's-his-face was an unsubstantiated CSB it would seem.

I've been running 20psi for a while as well and no problems yet (touch wood)

I ran 29psi on my MY05 WRX EJ205 stock block.

Boost is not the issue, the tune is.

What's your fascination with 22 pounds?
If you want, you could:
Exhaust
late model TMIC
good panel filter
injectors
VF34
ECU
+tuned to 22psi
=270+ hp atw on a standard un-opened ej205 safely and reliably.
(about $2.5-3k total)

Or you could spend 5-10k on a 207 and make the same power on the same boost...
