Car Shudder, please look.
Hi everyone.
Now, this has been bothering me ever since I bought the car... Don't care too much for it but I would definitely like to know what causes it or how to remedy it. Car is an MY06 STI. When I either; 1. Reverse out of a driveway. 2. Pull into a driveway. And have the steering wheel turned on either one lock or full lock or really any angle and take my foot off the clutch to gain some momentum the car shudders and it's really uncomfortable. It will also happen if I decide to step on the gas a little bit too so my foot doesn't have to have contact whatsoever with the clutch for it to happen. I have since ruled out any clutch problem. - Don't hesitate to correct me though as I'm no mechanic. When I reverse out of or pull into a driveway straight though this shuddering does not happen. PLEASE NOTE: This is when the car's DCCD is set to [AUTO]. I have spoken to a few people and have been told this is not normal. I have also taken it to MMS for them to look at when I had it serviced last but it didn't happen. We took it around the workshop for a drive but it just didn't happen for some reason but it's EXTREMELY noticeable when it's at my place or the missus' place. One thing I have noticed though... When I set the DCCD to all the way back and set to full green, this shuddering disappears! Any thoughts or suggestions as to what it may be people? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I have searched on here upside down and inside out and have found nothing similar, please help! Andrew |

Does it still happen at manual 50/50?
Is it steering related i.e as you actually turn the wheel to pull in to the driveway? I so it may be the P/steering belt related.

Hey Rossco... I haven't actually tried it at 50/50 manual, I'll give that a shot after work tonight and update thread accordingly.
And regarding your second point, it's if the wheel is already turned and I'm entering/exiting the driveway. It will not happen before I turn and would not happen if the car and it's front wheels were facing forward. Just a note out of curiosity though, if it did happen at 50/50 manual DCCD setting, would that be a big problem with the differential then? |

If its a clunk clunk clunk, almost like the wheels are 'skipping'...sounds like normal diff lock noise.

Is driveway flat or incline/decline?

yup. Normal. Your car will sound like something is broken if you try a tight turn at 50/50 locked.
Its the DCCD unit in the gearbox making that noise. It has locked the front and rear axles together. When you make a tight turn the front and rear axles will rotate at different speeds which causes the center diff when locked to clunk and groan. It will try to keep the axles locked together and will cause one of the inside wheels on the turn to skip as well. 99.9% of the time I leave my DCCD on full rear. Unlocked.

Okay Kato, that's pretty much what it is... Very vague but accurate description and pcracing, it happens hot and cold... Moreso on cold though like it's more obvious.
pmh... The driveways are pretty much flat and Mister Two, thanks for the explanation mate, all these comments have definitely answered a lot of wonders for me. All of you have been fantastic, thank you so much!!! Now I don't feel like there's something wrong with my car anymore lol. It's just so uncomfortable but at least now I know. Thanks everybody, Admin can close if they wish, I've got all the information I need! |
