Cat Converter
Hey Guys,
Just looking for some advice: At the moment I'm looking into gradually selling the WRX and possibly upgrading to a newer version however at the moment i have to sell mine. Currently I'm trying to drive my WRX around as an A to B car.. After getting my car evaluated at Magic Nissan (Melville) i have had a rather large ticking sound coming from underneath the car. I have had one of my family members who is a mechanic had a quick brief look at it in by pass and has told me that the cat converter has been damaged. My actual question is to you: - Can the Cat Converter be repaired?, If so can anyone list some places that can? - How much is a new Cat Converter? - Will the whole Exhaust system need to be replaced? Technical details: - HKS cat back exhaust system - 2001 Bug Eye Look forward to responses. - Wilko |

you'll get a cat for $100 bux from JWS... surely? New 'race cats' usually go for $350ish?

Hey, Thanks for the prompt response As im not technically gifted do you know how much it would cost to fit a cat converter? Is there anyway it can be repaired? Without taking it into a shop is there anyway you can actually tell its the cat converter (any signs) other than just ticking whilst idoling / driving? If i continue driving in the car will my whole exhaust system be up for replacement? |

I suppose if it got a hard enough knock and was dented it could fracture the monolith. Beware the pre-cat in the up-pipe for the turbocharger also.

Buy your cat (2nd hand or new) then get a local exhaust place to weld it in replacing the old one, get a quote first as some places will charge like a wounded bull!
I can recommend 2 places, Butler built in Carisle or Mettams muffler in Morley as both have done quality work for the price.

Ah ok, sorry I'm just going off what i have said(as I'm not technically gifted), I'm a bit afraid to drive the car at the moment :-/ the ticking is rather loud Its definitely coming from the bottom of the car and at the start the sound would only be there when i took my foot off of the accelerator and it was coming from the exhaust system and we did believe it was coming from the middle bottom where the cat converter is located. I do have a rather big exhaust (aka Milo tin) and it is loud but i seem to still be able to hear the ticking still pretty clearly. |

sure a bracket isnt loose?
there is a small 14mm bolt that holds the rear of the dump-pipe section behind the cat, if there is damage there, the exhaust could just be tapping that bracket.
