Default Chugging?

Hi Guys,

my question is just a general concern - possibly nothing.

I dont drive my wrx much at all lately - maybe once every 2 weeks for 50 km's... on the weekend i took the wrx out on a cruise.. travelled 35km's to the meet point and was fine with no issues. then on the way to the next meet point (and no i wasnt being silly at this point i hadnt even hit turbo yet actually lol..) once we got on the freeway north my girlfriend started saying she could hear chugging coming from the engine, the car was running fine and i couldnt hear it at all.

i got home shortly after she said it was making funny noises because i was worried, i popped the bonnet and i could hear a slight chug so i checked everything and couldnt see anything wrong.

i have recently had my throttle body cleaned in the wrx as it was rather filthy but that was 2 weeks ago. its up to date on its services as i have only driven it 2000km's since its last service. Oil isnt dirty or anything. Coolant level was a little bit high. TMIC was screwed in there really tight.

I did however clean out the K & N filter to make sure it wasnt that but havent driven it yet since.

I suppose all in all my question is, what else would make it chug? there are currently no problems at all with the wrx and have had 2 mechanics over it 2 weeks ago to check that.

When you cleaned the k & n filter did you oil it ? If so, clean it again and put it back in dry. Then clean your air flow meter with contact cleaner, the k & n oil will coat the hot wire in the air flow meter and cause the engine to run rough in many circumstances.

DO not use a K&N filter without oiling it! They do not filter properly if they aren't oiled.
Take it to your mechanic and get them to have a quick look and listen.

fk sake, do not use any oil based filters for the wrx. Use a filter like blitz or apexi with dry filtration elements.

From experience --- vacuum leak. fuel filter, fuel pump and maf can cause your 'chugging problem'.

hey guys, thank you for the feedback.

I purchased the proper K & N filter cleaner and that does include the K & N oil in it... making it awfully bright red after use

but i only cleaned it out afterwards i havent driven it since.

if it was a vacuum leak / fuel filter / fuel pump or maf how would i be able to tell for certain do you know?

my car's done this before, took apart the pod and connector piece and looked at my hot wire, it was literally coated black from the oil (i use k&n oiled pod), i just smashed some contact cleaner on it and the issues were solved

i usually do this every month

sigh....read my post above. since you use k+n oil element with 'bright red' oil. might as well let it keep chugging.
while you are at it, might as well pour some oil on the hotwire too.

I've been using a K&N filter on my bugeye for about 18 months now, cleaned and re oiled it twice, never had an issue.
It sounds like your over-oiling the filter, it only needs to be a pale pink colour.
Maybe get a professional to recharge it for you.
