After stripping my TD04 everything inside looks fine. There is a little bit of shaft play and hence uses a little bit of oil.
How much play is acceptable? There are no signs of the blades rubbing on the housing. |

a little bit of play is normal. there should be no more than 1mm of sideways movement. This slack is taken up by the oil pressure creating a floating film between the shaft and the core.

Just a quick question. I have been thinking about it all day
How does the ecu know when to cut the fuel when boost goes too high? I thought it might be the boost solenoid on the inner guard, but it still cuts boost with those vacuum pipes to the solenoid disconnected??? And Rex's don't use map sensors??????? |

WRXs actually do have MAP sensors, but they are not used in the calculation of fuel injection. The MAP sensor should be located in the same area as the boost solenoid but it has its own vacuum line coming off the manifold. The purpose of the MAP sensor in a WRX is solely for boost sensing for the purpose of fuel cut in the event of an over boost.
