shaft play is unacceptable if the blades can contact the housing, it is also unacceptable if you can pull back and forth along the length of the turbine on the blades, this motion is the movement on the seals and explain why turbos will consume oil. this is caused by either a restrictive inlet or a very restrictive turbine outlet into the dump.

I've got a VF30 sitting around with a tiny hair line crack in the exhaust housing. I'm currently using a VF34 in my wagon, just wondering if i could chop and change exhaust/compressors over between the two to make some kind of hybrid? any advantages? or are the compressor sides on the 30 and 34 the same?

Does anyone have a copy of the compressor maps for VF series turbos?
Specifically, VF34, VF35, VF39 and VF43? I've tried everywhere to find them, but come up with nothing

Thrust movement (back and forth) is slightly more critical than shaft play, when looking at a 2nd hand turbo. Ball bearing turbos should have very little shaft play, whilst plain bearing turbos will have more, due to the oil clearance around the shaft. A dry bearing will play, but once oil goes to the bearing, it makes up the clearance. In any case, the blades should not hit the housing. |

I will be in the market for a new turbo shortly, and was thinking of a VF34. I would also consider a 23 or 22.
My question is would a 22 be too laggy for my everyday drive? Also could I retain my factory WRX top mount with the 22 or need to go front mount. I aint a big fan of front mounts unless running huge power. Other mods will be: 3" TBE Link ECU Forged internals Walbro 255 fuel pump Pod filter with CAI All comments appreciated Cheers Scott. |

i have a 22 with P18 housing and its isn't that laggy at all plus i have FMIC. I did want to go 34 but not sure if ill get anymore power if i do, maybe just get rid of some lag and loose power. If you want you can come for a drive in mine since you work nearby
