Brake Upgrades for Bugeye WRX
Can anyone offer (good) advice on braking upgrades for my ride?
Considering a brembo conversion, do I need to change hubs for this or can get 5x100 rotors to suit? Aftermarket options? Or should I just get semi-track pads, braided lines and suitable brake fluid with standard callipers?

Dont even need to change the hubs. Brembo's bolt straight on.
For the rears though, you need the DBA conversion rotor - For the front, the DBA STI 4000 or 5000 disc if you're keen. DBA 4000 Slotted Rotor Rears (WRX Brembo conversion) - DBA The WRX brakes are pretty good, and respond well to braided lines and a decent set of pads & fluid, perfect for street really. Brembo's are arguably superior in performance, depending on them being installed with good pads etc. Brembo's will work shit with shit pads, so much braking performance comes down to the type of pad you use, then continual hard stops then starts to mean you need bigger/better rotors, etc. Brakes can be a very subjective & technical discussion. Check out the STD brakes, they are well priced I think and an alternative to Brembo's. Alcon/AP is probably out of your budget I suspect. If you don't want to spend big on a conversion, try changing your pads and getting your WRX setup and see if you are happy with the difference, as a full Brembo conversion to a WRX is about $3k at least (I have done it) Last edited by RichX; 17-10-2013 at 05:49 PM. |

Having done the full brembo upgrade to my bugeye I can say it gets expensive as you also need to consider new rims that clear the massive brembo front calliper. As rich said May be worth looking at Std I know simon is running them on the wagon

Thanx guys. I have tried looking up info on STD brakes with no luck as I have STD coil overs which I am very happy with. Guess I'll ask Mao when I'm there in a couple of weeks
Current rims should clear brembo calipers if I go down that path. (2013 WRX wheels 17 x 8)

Pads do make a huge difference even with brembos.
In my (Sti) I've been through Bendix Ultimates, AF1RM and Hawkes along with good brake fluid, although that hasn't changed as religiously as it should. Each have had a different feel and braking characteristics, including squealing in daily duties. Really would be worth trying a semi comp type pad, and if doing a bit of track work, perhaps some cooling, my next step. You may find this works for you and spend the $3K on other things including semi slicks, which also have a big impact on improving braking, as well as corner speed.

Mate if you are going to track your car from sprints upwards then definately worth doing. If you are just doing it for poser factor then not worth the expense in my opinion.
I have a MY05 and have been running standard calipers with Ferodo DS2500 pads, tried QFM A1RM once and didn't like them, with Brembo LCF600+ fluid , braided lines and DBA5000 rotors. I never really had any problems except for brightly glowing rotors at the McRae Rallysprint. BEFORE Done the Brembo upgrade front and rear and they are much better than standard I reckon. Now running Project MU SCR Pro rotors and PMU HC+ pads (very dusty) in the front and DBA conversion rotor with PMU B spec pads in the rear. AFTER Basically if you track your car then do it. If you dont, or only occasionally do, then your standard calipers with the right ingredients will be more than good enough and will save you some $$$$$. Hope this helps and good luck with whatever you decide to do |

Braided lines, good pads, good rotors, good fluid, with the system properly flushed = the 4 pots being more than adequate.
