Rx performance mods
Just purchased a 96 rx in great condition. Being a 2l non turbo it is in serious need of some grunt.
Ive read thru a lot of the board archives but havnt come across much info relating to non turbo imprezas. Any imput as to the most suitable and cost effective performace mods would be greatly appreciated. |

Yep, half cut is the only way.
Trying to get cost effective power out of an NA 2 litre is like trying to nail vomit to a wall.....impossible, not to mention no matter what you do to an NA 2 litre, even if it involves nitrous and full engine builds, a mildly tuned WRX will still chop it. |

you can nail vomit to the wall... you have to let it dry in the sun until its baked hard and then scrape it off with a sharp spatula as one piece and thats it.
There are ways to get power out of an NA engine, but only if you have deep pockets. A good early GC8 half cut should cost around $3500. Leave around $2K for install of engine and wiring. Zero if you know how to do it yourself. And thats it!

Minor improvement--
Piggy back ecu, muffler, intake More, in order of cost. Having investigated this myself a few years ago I think the above cost figures are optimistic -- Bore out, 2.2L should be ok, up to 2.5L maybe. Blueprint- balance pistons and crank, valve springs to get it to rev higher Change motor to 2.5 L (3litre is better if you can get) Turbo kit Supercharger kit Change motor to turbo (half cut) Compared to trade up, what is cost effective? None of the above even doing all work yourself. But if you have fallen in love with the car and that is you thing, do it and good luck and we’d be keen to get the story. |

nah, no point in modifying an NA engine, i have an RX and all i've dun is cold air induction and exhaust. Without forking out huge amounts of cash its pointless to try and extract power from an NA engine.
Definently go the half cut, u already have the 4wd advantage.
