I think most of the posts here are missing the point.

A drug addict is NEVER reformed. Its a continual battle for the rest of your life, same as being an alcoholic.
Cocaine, Heroin, Alcohol, Nicotine and Methamphetamine (ICE) are very addictive substances. Some legal others not.

The AFL in conjunction with the West Coast Eagles have tried to treat drug and alcohol addiction as primarily health issues, hence the three strikes policy. Its understandable this policy was taken with the majority of AFL players around, or under 25 years of age. Why destroy a talented players potential by publicly naming them if they happen to make a silly mistake and experiment with drugs during the AFL season ?
That policy seems fair and sensible for players who may have not have the mental maturity to realise the mistake they are making. However as for the older players of the game....

Ben Cousins. A Superstar of the game. Brownlow Medallist. Role Model of the Auskick Kids. Leader - gifted with freakish physical talent. Extremely well paid and admired.

I believe a risk was taken by both the West Coast Eagles, the AFL and Cousins himself by rushing a REFORMED drug addict back into the game so quickly. Sure it may have helped his psychological state to be back with his mates playing the game he loved. But was it too soon ?

The recent tragic overdose death of his mate Chris Mainwaring would be enough to send any sain person over the edge, let alone a battling drug addict. No amount of money, adulation or public support would ever make up for the loss of a mate with a beautiful young family.

Unfortunately Cousins will either be de-listed by the AFL as a player or sacked by the West Coast Eagles due to clauses in his 2007 contract. I find this very very sad but necessary for the AFL to try and project a healthy clean image.

I hope Cousins can manage his addiction for the rest of his life and West Australians do not get a repeat of the very sad Chris Mainwaring affair.

What a tragedy for everyone involved.
Its been a very sad year for Western Australian footy

Very well said and one of the few posts in this thread that has any decency about it..

To all you people with comments like.... Fuk you etc, grow a brain!!!

ditto^ well put WRXTASY...

Interested to know what the facts are exactly before casting any judgement on this situation.

Also what does "posession of a prohibited drug" actually translates & mean...

Even though I'm a Dockers supporter I will be angry if WCE and AFL waiver in their support of a player going through a drug rehabilitation process...IMO falling off the wagon is a natural part of the process (if that is what has indeed occured with Ben). He deserves a fair go.

How was that tragic?

Someone who dies from taking cocaine, ecstasy, cannabis, anti-depressants and alcohol within a short time period has it coming to them and doesn't deserve any sympathy from us.

If it was some unknown drug addict on the street it wouldn't be news and you'd all pass it off as another useless life gone - just because he had some skill in kicking a funny shaped ball it becomes a tragic event.
