Home theater speaker Guru's.. advice
Anybody here into this stuff?
I have around $1.8-2.5g to spend on audio. 7.1 sound. Subwoofer at this stage on-top of the price (i'l buy one seperatly). Speakers are run off a Yamaha rx-v1800 receiver. 130x7 rms. I want. 2 x floor standing speakers + 1 centre channel. 4 x surround speakers to be able to be mounted off the ceiling (dont want to make cavities in walls due to it being plastered and painted already). The room is large, and ceiling high. Can i mount bookshelf speakers off the ceiling?? For centre and rear surround? I was looking at the Bose acoustimass... but most reviews said the shit. so looking at decent quality speakers! anybody in the business?? cheers |

tode, I'm an audiophile from way back. You have a great amp for the purpose but I'm afraid you'll have to stretch the budget (double) a bit more for the full 7.1 speaker set if you want anything of quality.
I personally run a Yamaha RV-X3800 and Bowers & Wilkins speakers in my system but you'd be paying over 2g just for the 683 series front speakers, but boy are they awesome. Don't 'need' a sub with these speakers but one would certainly top it off. Top sub in this series (bi-amped DVC 10") comes in at $1900 You can mount the rears in the roof facing down but for best results you'd want them from parallel to you to about 30 degrees behind. The surround rears then would go right back behind you. If your couch is going right against the wall then 5.1 will work out best and see if you can't bi-wire the fronts (like I have with the B&W's) then run the centre and surrounds as normal. The centre channel should be placed below the screen facing up slightly so it's a straight line to your ears when you'er sitting. EDIT: You could also consider speaker stands for the rears

cheers dude,
The couch (looong couch) is against the rear wall. I guess I can drill into the rear wall (it is a double wall) to mount the speakers... So you reccommend a bookshelf for the rear? The only option for centre speakers is ceiling mount unfortunatly.. I'd like a 7.1 system - though i guess this is easily upgradable in the future and not really that important atm. The reason i went with the RX-V1800 is because is didnt need the networking option of the RX-V3800. Both essentially the same. Where do i buy B&W speakers? - I dont want to over-capitalize on it - since i'l be moving out when i get married eventually... And i doubt my old man & mum would notice a difference between your avergae Big-W spec speaker and a $1500 one... when their watching some SBS monday night euro porn haha Would a lower series B&W fall into my price range? $2.5g MAX. |

I'm using JBL's (ES90 * 2, ES25C * 1, ES250P * 1 and ES20 * 4)
http://www.jbl.com/home/products/ser...&Region=EUROPE Very happy with them Using smaller speakers or less speakers or a find a special on and you could get for the high side of your budget.

Retravision Cannington had a Cost plus 5% (private) sale a few weeks before Xmas last year and I convinced the wife that they should be my pressie.
I would guess they still sell them there - at Cost plus 5 they were $2600 or so. I think if you shopped around or changed what you got (i.e. ES80's instead of 90's etc) you'd get closer to your budget. I went for the larger ones as they were so cheap at the time and the wife was in a good mood Her mood that week was so good I went two days later with her and bought Betsti.

Have you seen the 6.2 Sony Mu-Te-Ki system? That comes in at under a grand. Gets plenty loud but isn't the best sound (remember I love my sound clear as so I'm biased) but that should do you. Basically you get an amp (which you don't have to use cause you have the Yamaha) fronts, centre, rears and a centre rear as well as not one but two 10" subs. Check it out at Retravision etc Why can't you put the centre below the screen? Projector?
