I've lived in a few different (remote) places too...but I still keep in contact with a few friends from my younger days (36 next b'day). It doesn't matter if you're married, have a gf, kids etc etc.

Your real mates will be around when you need them, that's not to say you're out on the piss with them every weekend....Heck sometimes I haven't seen my best mate for 2-3 years at a time!

x3 agreed. i see my best mate every couple of years but we talk from time to time for hrs on the phone or internet but every time we catch up in person shes had another kid or some huge life changing event. we aim to catch up more often but both our lives are just too busy and a free time for me may not be a free time for her. its life. we learn to live like it. not everything stays the same forever. best of luck dude. yet ya mate be pussy whipped and enjoy your freedom while you still have it :P

Its kinda hard to be there and support someone who hasn't entirely been there for you. Although the mates may have grown up together with him since they were kids, they were once close and now they find it hard to even get a decent conversation when they do meet up at those accidental times - awkward silences will happen too often.

So would he still be considered a close friend even though he dissappeared 5yrs+? or would he now just be considered as one of those friends you just say 'hi-bye' too?
