The best way to stop them is to basically acknowledge them when they do it. They think they are guarding and if you don't do anything they will continue to alert you hence if you call there name (in the way that you call them to come to you) they will 9 /10 quiet down.

you have 4 options when it comes to the collar's, static, spray, sonic or voice control and the most effective to least effective are in that order. Or you can call up bark buster's (dog trainers) if you dont wanna use a training collar.

Google it, there's a mobile trainer that will teach your dog when and when not to bark.. those sorta collars are basically a load of crap... If you're not there and someone goes to do your place over, you want the dog to not bark because of a collar... Otherwise, if you don't wish to pay out the money for the trainer, buy extra toys so the dogs anxiety of you leaving is replaced with curiosity and time filling. There are a few diff toys on the market to keep your dogs interest including toys where the objective is to get treats out of them. Yes even for rotties. I had a similar problem with my shepherd, that used to work for me, all it took was some toys, and some time for the dog to get used to being left on it's own.

It looks identical to the shock collar but has a small tank which you put pressurised citronella in. Then it just sprays them in the face when they bark. I feel its better than shock treatment.

Not this, illegal and deeply unfair on the dog. They are intelligent critters and their only form of communication is with barking.

Walk your dog, or let it walk you?

Some would argue it's their tail, hence, the restrictions on docking tails.
